Key University Builds a Secure AI Foundation for Modern Learning
The service provider arm of this well known University set out to build an enterprise-grade AI chatbot platform to transform how students, faculty, and staff access knowledge. The project is part of a long-term mission to develop advanced technology and operational infrastructure for its partner institutions.
The chatbot platform uses multiple backend AI models and enables academic teams to develop specialized chatbots for programs such as nursing education. From the outset, the CISO needed a way to secure every interaction across the platform, including the prompts and responses.
His concern was that users might unintentionally enter regulated data, credentials, health information, or personal student details into AI tools. Once shared, that information could flow into backend systems or even into the training sets of external models.
“Anytime you introduce AI into core academic workflows, you have to assume sensitive data will find its way into a prompt,” he said. “Our job was to make sure that risk never became a blocker to innovation.”
Part of the challenge was that the chatbot platform does not operate in isolation. It depends on external models, evolving AI services, and internal applications that could introduce new security considerations. Securing the chatbot effectively meant securing the entire interaction layer behind it: the place where prompts, responses, and agents reason and take action.

The prompt that ultimately reaches the third-party models is clean.”

The University initially explored building its own redaction and sanitization tooling. But the time and effort required would have slowed momentum, diverted engineering cycles, and increased operational overhead. When a policy needs to change — whether to expand use cases, tighten controls, or respond to new threats — the team can adjust it immediately without waiting for development sprints.
